Coach Joe

After spending 10+ years as a sales and business development professional in the Oil & Gas industry, a down market in 2016 led to my being laid off twice. Luckily that pushed me back into something I am very passionate about…coaching. Since 2016 I have been providing the Houston area with technical expertise both in the pool and in open water swimming. I am also a full time Residential Mortgage Loan Originator with a Mortgage Bank here in Houston.

As a coach…
I’ve spent the last 22 years coaching at some level from learn to swim all the way up to Ironman Champions in the water. I’ve worked with athletes of all ages, sizes, and ability levels. Coaching isn’t just about writing workouts and designing a plan. It’s about being able to listen and understand the athletes you work with and adapting to their individual needs. My expertise is very much in the water, but I have learned to translate that experience into all aspects of triathlon. With the adaptive software platform Eric has created and my expertise in endurance sports, we can help you go above and beyond your goals as an athlete no matter the level you see yourself at now. Whether you’re aiming for Ironman World Championships or trying to complete your first triathlon, I’m here to help you reach your goals.

As an athlete…
I swam competitively for over 20 years. Getting started at my neighborhood swim team, and quickly moving on to swimming year-round with FLEET in Cypress, TX. I was an 11 time NCAA All-American and 3 time NCAA National Champion competing for the University of Texas. While in Austin training with the Longhorns, I was on the USA National Team competing at the Pan American Games where I won a silver medal and the Goodwill Games where I won Gold. I got into running and triathlons shortly after “retiring” from swimming after my last US Olympic Trials in 2004. I’ve completed 5 full marathons, countless half marathons and 10k running races. My triathlon experience includes being first out of the water in all distances from sprint all the way up to 70.3. I am plan to complete my first 50k trail race and hopefully full ironman in the next year or two.
